Carolina Panthers @ San Francisco ’49ers -6.5
This is going to be a very telling game for Cam Newton and his evolution and improvement as an NFL quarterback as he and his surging Panthers head to San Francisco to do battle with the ’49ers. Both teams are enjoying lengthy win streaks coming into the battle, so something has got to give. I think the Panthers defence gives an the ’49ers roll to a nice win. As good as the Panthers have looked in their four game win streak, they have not faced a team with a winning record (Vikings, Rams, Bucs, Falcons). While the ’49ers who are on a five game streak have not played much stiffer competition, they have been dominant over the stretch, winning game by an average of 22 points. I think the ’49ers at home take it to the Panthers for a convincing win. The return of some key players (Manningham & A. Smith) will also help the cause. This is going to be a fun game to watch. ’49ers -6.5.
Philadelphia Eagles +1.5 @ Green Bay Packers
Without Aaron Rodgers I really doubt the Packers ability to keep up with the Eagles for a full game, as bad as the Eagles defence has been. The Eagles offence was firing on all cylinders last week and will hopefully be carrying some of that momentum into this weekend’s game in Lambeau. The Packers have had a very effective running game in the last few weeks with Eddie Lacy, but I have very little faith in new starter Seneca Wallace. The quarterback is the most important position on the field and if Foles is playing even remotely close to how he played last week, he and the Eagles should be able to take a game in Green Bay from Wallace and the Packers. Eagles +1.5.
Dallas Cowboys @ New Orleans Saints -6.5
The Cowboys are I team I often find myself betting in favour of and getting burned by whereas I love taking the Saints at home as they cover most of the time when playing in the Superdome. While a seven point spread may seem like quite a few points for the Cowboys to lose by, I like the odds of the Saints pouring it on late in this one. The Cowboys have only beaten bad teams this season; teams they should beat (Rams, Redskins, Eagles, Vikings). They have also lost to all the good teams they have faced this season (Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, Lions). What I take from this is that the Cowboys are still not a good team despite the talent on the roster. The Saints on the other hand have lost just once this season and that was on the road to a always tough New England Patriots team. I think the Saints play 4 quarters of quality football, whereas the Cowboys find ways to make mistakes on the road. Saints -6.5.
Detroit Lions +1.0 @ Chicago Bears
This game is essentially a pick ‘em game even with Jay Cutler out with an injury and that is because of the solid play of backup quarterback Josh McCown since replacing Cutler two weeks ago. I am going to pick the Lions in this one and will explain why. As mentioned in one of the above paragraphs, the quarterback is the most important player in the game and Matt Stafford is a better quarterback then Josh McCown despite how McCown has looked. The Lions are also coming off a bye week to prepare for the game whereas the Bears played on Monday Night Football and are on a short week. I like the Lions to get the win in this one and move atop the division with the Packers also losing to the Eagles. Lions +1.0.
Denver Broncos -7.5 @ San Diego Chargers
The Chargers beat the Indianapolis Colts a few weeks back and the Colts have given the Broncos their only loss of the season; it is time for things to come full circle this weekend when the Broncos beat the Chargers. I could go into a big spiel about why I think the Broncos will beat the Chargers by more than a touchdown but it would be very similar to when I picked the Broncos to cover two touchdowns over the Redskins. I think the Chargers will be able to put up a couple of scores against Denver, but in the end will not be able to keep up with Manning and the Broncos and will lose by about 10 points. Broncos -7.5.
